It’s Cabin Season

Ten new lakeside cabins inspire us to return to golf this fall.

My wife says she wants to come along on a golfing weekend with friends, so our whole family is booked to stay at Little Ocmulgee State Park & Lodge. The golf here is wonderful (we’ll get to that), but one of the best things for our family is staying again in a new cabin by the lake. We did it when the cabins were built and couldn’t wait to come back. Why?

Because the cabins all face the water. They are so gorgeous and comfortable; you might want to squat and stay forever. You may be surprised at this kind of quality in a state park, because these cabins are like little boutique hotels. This is full service, not your parents’ version of park life back in the day.

The 10 secluded lakeside cabins at Little O, as locals call the park, feature 2-bedrooms (4 beds total) and 2 full bathrooms cabins. Bath linens are provided. The cabins offer living rooms with cable TV and full kitchens that include a microwave, stove, coffeemaker, toaster, refrigerator, cookware, flatware, and dinnerware. There is a grill and outdoor patio, too.

Our daughter is using a wheelchair as she recovers from an illness. It’s important that she is comfortable, and Cabin No. 7 is ADA accessible. We are so thankful! Preserving her independence is key when we travel these days.

Among several accessible features, this cabin has lower bathroom counters, grab bars in the shower, and the toilet is at the right height for ADA requirements. When about 20% of our general population experiences accessibility needs, whether temporary or permanent, it makes us feel more grateful to the park for ensuring people have a comfortable and independent sense of place.

After a day of golf, it’s wonderful to open the door, come inside, and relax in the tranquility of our own private space and no shared walls.

But back to golf! The people at the pro shop of the championship Wallace Adams 18-hole golf course are more than helpful. They love connecting people with the game of golf, the outdoors, and encouraging camaraderie among friends and family.

You can play the Wallace Adams Golf Course year-round. Locals may not want me shouting out how amazing it is, but this is a friendly course with its own challenges. Golfers of all ages and abilities play here. The doglegs throughout the 18-hole course mean golfers are more likely to play to a spot on the fairway to set up second and third shots.

Where’s the 19th hole? Reward your tired muscles with food and drink at Mulligan’s Grille just off the practice green behind the Lodge. The menu is designed for sharing and drinks are fashioned with the golfer in mind. Fried pickles with a pale ale – that’s all me. The menu includes appetizers, salads, burgers, tacos and other delicious options.

The country club-style setting in this 1,360-acre Georgia State Park on the Little Ocmulgee River is for everyone. You can play golf, fish on the pier, hike nature trails, borrow a lodge bike, and bring your own watercraft to launch from sandy Thaxton Beach to explore the lake environment. There’s more to do and see! You can also choose from among 60 Lodge guest rooms and a campground with 54 sites for tent and RV camping.

For our family, it’s cabin season. We’re booked and ready for golf.
